Jan Perry has been the General Manager of the Los Angeles Economic and Workforce Development Department (EWDD) since 2013 when Mayor Eric Garcetti appointed her to the position. Both Ms. Perry and the Mayor share a passion for job creation and neighborhood revitalization knowing both are key to building sustainable communities.

Jan Perry, EWDD General ManagerMs. Perry manages a 175 employee staff at the Economic and Workforce Development Department that is responsible for the administration of millions of dollars in federal funds earmarked for programs such as workforce and youth development, job skills training, and small business loans. The department also manages a significant federal loan portfolio for the development of projects that support community development and job creation.

The EWDD was created in 2013 to increase support for business activity and build a strong tax base. Ms. Perry knows that economic development and employment stimulate growth to attract investment and create opportunities for public-private partnerships.

As the former Los Angeles City Council member for the 9th District, Ms. Perry possesses a keen, knowledge of the legislative and planning processes for project development. During her 12 years in office she oversaw major changes in the 9th District’s infrastructure, a district that included Bunker Hill, Little Tokyo and South Los Angeles. Her time as an elected official resulted in quality job development and training and the expansion of housing for persons living at all income levels.

Within the first months of joining EWDD Ms. Perry oversaw the redesign of the WorkSource Center System which included a Request for Proposal process for contractors to operate the WorkSource Centers, where job seeking individuals can receive professional assistance and support. Ms. Perry also followed through with Mayor Garcetti’s vision to put 10,000 Los Angeles youth in summer jobs. Jan Perry, EWDD General Manager Ms. Perry understands the relationship between economic development and job creation and seeks to create a pipeline of job opportunities for the unemployed.

She carried out the implementation and launch of a job related website called, JobsLA.org. This City of Los Angeles site is designed with a powerful search engine that works nightly to gather jobs from government and private websites, then posts them to the JobsLA.org boards. In less than four months after its October 2014 launch, the site had twenty-three thousand visitors and more than a half million jobs listed.

Jan Perry earned her bachelor’s degree from the USC School of Journalism, cum laude, and her master’s degree from USC in public administration.
