Vernon-Central/LATTC WSC Hosts Discussion with African Delegation
On Friday, April 13, 2018, the Vernon-Central Los Angeles Technical Trade College WorkSource Center (WSC) hosted a roundtable meeting with a delegation from Africa for a comprehensive discussion on how to reach disconnected youth, along with workforce development systems.
The delegation was also interested in how to best serve youth who are no longer in school and those involved in the justice system.
BusinessSource Assists Geotechnical Engineer With $250,000 SBA Loan
The Mid City BusinessSource Center recently assisted Dr. Dotun Oyenuga in securing a $250,000 Small Business Administration loan that will enable his engineering firm to hire 20 employees, create a new location and fulfill a contract for Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro).
Dr. Oyenuga started Dotun Oyenuga DBA Analysis & Solutions Consultants in 2007 and he is an industry expert in geotechnical engineering.
The Harbor-Watts BusinessSource Center, overseen by EWDD Partner Managed Career Solutions, helped entrepreneur Jose Rivera obtain a $3,500 working capital loan for his business, Paul’s Original Shoe and Working Boot Manufacturing in San Pedro.
Jose is a cobbler with more than 30 years of experience. He started out as an apprentice when he first immigrated to the United States and after the original owner Paul retired, Jose took over the business. Jose’s specialty is work boots for the dock workers and firemen in the Harbor region, along with custom jobs and shoe repairs.
EWDD General Manager Jan Perry and the City of LA’s Workforce Development Board (WDB) Chair, Charlie Woo, participated in a press conference last week to promote the City’s job programs to LA’s Asian Pacific Islander (API) community.
EWDD partner Faith and Community Empowerment (FACE) held the press conference, which drew media representatives from The Korea Times and World Journal, a Chinese daily newspaper.
Hollywood WSC Places 26 Job Seekers at Local Health Care Company
The Hollywood WorkSource Center (WSC) worked closely with receivable and resource management company USCB America to place 26 job seekers in healthcare-related jobs in downtown Los Angeles.
USCB America Human Resources Generalist Priscilla Manosalva reached out to the Hollywood WSC, overseen by EWDD partner Managed Career Solutions, for assistance in identifying qualified candidates for the company's open positions.
BusinessSource Helps Metal Designer Featured at Coachella Get $35k Loan
The Hollywood BusinessSource Center (BSC) recently helped designer Rafael Portillo secure a $35,000 loan to expand his company Vuro Industries, a business specializing in custom designed products, including furniture, prototypes and sculptures.
Born in Juarez, Mexico, Rafael left his hometown in 2008 with a truck and $2,000 in his pocket. Within a week, Rafael had a job at a metal fabrication company in Los Angeles. The company specialized in creating pieces for the museum and art industries.
YouthSource Participant Graduates HireLAX Construction Program
The Youth Opportunity Movement (YOM), Watts YouthSource Center celebrated the graduation of participant Brian Phillips from the HireLAX Apprenticeship Readiness Program (ARP), an 8-week course that prepares students for careers in construction.
“Most of the people that I have seen who have graduated from high school have gone on from doing small jobs,” said Brian, 18. “I wanted to do something big, that’s gonna last, a career.”
Held March 24-27, and attended by over 1,200 workforce leaders, advocates, and change-makers in business, government, labor and education, the conference addresses key issues affecting US workforce development and considers the goals and policy framework affecting the future of human capital and economic growth.
EWDD Rapid Response Team Assists Transition of Ports O’Call Village
EWDD’s Rapid Response Team has consistently provided support services to business owners and job seekers affected by the demolition of the Ports O’Call Village in San Pedro to make way for the San Pedro Public Market redevelopment project.
EWDD Senior Project Assistant Dennis Parks has led the extensive coordination effort to alert Ports O’Call employees and businesses about EWDD’s Rapid Response services, which provide free assistance with unemployment insurance benefits, registration with CalJobs, resources for mortgage payments, access to health and retirement benefits, and job search/job training resources.
Three Re-Entry Workers Hired on the Spot at Hollywood WSC Job Fair
Three individuals who were recently released from prison were hired on-the-spot at Hollywood WorkSource Center’s first Re-Entry Job and Resource Fair on Wednesday, March 28, 2018.
A dozen employers across several industries were in attendance to recruit security officers, warehouse workers, couriers, construction workers, customer service representatives and case managers. Each employer had hiring policies that are inclusive of individuals recently released from incarceration, probationers and parolees and interviewed them on the spot.

Para Los Niños Youth Travel to Washington, DC for Leadership Summit
Para Los Niños (PLN) students Angeline Moran and Alexa Flores were selected to participate in the 2018 UnidosUS Escalera Summit in Washington, DC, a national program designed to provide support to Latino students who may be the first in their families to attend college.
Angeline and Alexa, both 17, also attended the UnidosUS Leaders in Action Summit, a two-day advocacy training for aspiring activists and community leaders that culminates in a visit with members of Congress at Capitol Hill.
