EWDD staff offer YouthSource, WorkSource and BusinessSource service information to a 2019 Central Avenue Jazz Fest attendee
More than 270 individuals visited the EWDD booths at the Central Avenue Jazz Festival on July 27-28, 2019.

Held in South LA, staff from EWDD’s YouthSource, WorkSource and BusinessSource Centers worked the booths all weekend, an example of EWDD’s community outreach efforts to inform Angelenos about EWDD’s services for youth, job seekers and entrepreneurs. In addition, a representative from the North San Fernando Valley WorkSource, overseen by EWDD partner Youth Policy Institute provided extra coverage to assist EWDD.

The City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, Bureau of Sanitation held a culmination ceremony Friday July 26, 2019 celebrating 21 Hire LA’s Youth interns.

The bureau has partnered with EWDD for several years to utilize funding from the Hire LA’s Youth program for its “Summer Introduction to Engineering and Science Program,” a six-week program where interns work in the Bureau’s various divisions providing assistance to engineers, office clerks and administrators.

Compass Rose Collaborative Re-Entry Program participants train for OSHA certification
The Compass Rose Collaborative (CRC) Re-Entry Program recently released a performance report announcing that 95 percent of participants completed 120 hours of training to receive a Safety Pre-Apprentice Certificate.

The report, which covers January through July 2019, said that 84 percent of CRC participants are currently employed full-time or part time. The program, which targets all of Los Angeles County, is geared toward youth participants between ages 18-24 who have recently been paroled or are on probation.

The Hollywood BusinessSource Center helped Matias Vanegas, owner of American Cleaning Company, secure a $2,000 microloan to build his website, advertise, and purchase uniforms to expand his business.

Matias, an El Salvador native with many years of experience in the commercial cleaning industry, launched his own commercial cleaning company in mid-2017. He recently met with a business coach at the Hollywood BusinessSource Center who helped Matias complete a needs assessment and analyzed his financials.

EWDD unveiled another social media video Monday July 15, 2019 across its @LAEWDD Instagram, Twitter and Facebook account. This week’s video provides a tour of the South LA YouthSource Center located at Southwest College, the first YSC site to be co-located with an America’s Job Center of California at a Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) campus.

Boyle Heights Technology YouthSource Center welcomes 80 Hire LA’s Youth 2019 summer interns
The Boyle Heights Technology YouthSource Center (YSC) launched its Hire LA’s Youth summer internship program this week with more than 80 participants.

On Monday July 15, 2019, participants were required to attend a mandatory internship prep session that taught students about workplace expectations, performance evaluations, goal setting, complaint procedures, safety, time sheet instructions and grounds for termination. All participants will be placed at a worksite intended to provide a meaningful work experience.
