EWDD Interim General Manager John L Reamer Junior gathers with participants from the Boyle Heights Technology, CRCD, YoWatts and El Proyecto YouthSource Centers at the Youth@Work press conference June 26, 2019
Nearly 60 youth from six EWDD YouthSource Centers and two Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) partners showed up July 2, 2019 in support of Mayor Eric Garcetti’s press conference launching the 2019 Hire LA’s Youth program.

Held at the Los Angeles City College campus, youth from the Boyle Heights Technology YouthSource Center, Brotherhood Crusade, Coalition for Responsible Community Development (CRCD), El Proyecto Del Barrio, Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC) and Youth Policy Institute (YPI) attended, representing YouthSource Centers from South and Central LA, and the North Valley region.

Laura Peralta, Citi Vice President of Community Development, spoke on behalf of the Citi Foundation, the largest private contributor to the Hire LA’s Youth program. Laura shared the success story of Destiny Nguyen, a former foster youth who through Hire LA’s Youth, worked as a Financial Services Coach through the Cities for Financial Empowerment (CFE) Fund.

Destiny currently works as a Community Administrative Support Worker for EWDD.

“We want to make sure that we continue supporting Destiny and her peers,” Laura said. “So far we have supported summer job opportunities for more than 1,000 youth. We hope to continue this initiative and we look forward to continuing our support for many years to come.”
