EWDD General Manager Carolyn Hull recently joined Councilmembers Eunisses Hernandez and Tim McOsker to announce the one-year extension of the Gang Injunction Curfew Settlement, along with a renewed push to identify and connect class members to services and benefits.
“The extension of this program provides an opportunity for the City to continue its effort to identify, reach and enroll as many eligible class members as possible,” said Carolyn Hull, General Manager of the Economic and Workforce Development Department. “If you are a settlement class member, we encourage you to visit an EWDD WorkSource Center, which can guide you through the process of accessing program benefits and services.”
Also known as the “Rodríguez vs. City of Los Angeles” settlement, the class action lawsuit represented 6,000 Angelenos impacted by the creation and enforcement of gang injunctions in the late 1980s and 1990s. As part of the settlement, the City agreed to assist plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit with resources such as educational and vocational training, paid work experience, work clothes, tools, transportation, license and certification support, and related resources. Class member claim forms will be accepted until March 27, 2024. The last day to receive services under the Jobs and Education Program is June 27, 2024.
The City centralized the services under the Los Angeles Reconnections Career Academy 2.0 (LARCA 2.0), which is administered by EWDD. As of June 2023, approximately 1,078 individuals have received job training or education benefits that have allowed them to upskill in their professions or change careers.
The program has also helped 46 settlement members launch their own businesses, including Claudia Valle, Program Director of Healing Urban Barrios.
“This has helped me in many ways,” Claudia said. “They helped me cover my expenses to create my own business. Not only that, it has covered expenses and tools to help me to continue flourishing toward my future goals. Don’t miss the opportunity!”
