Hire LA’s Youth participant Adaena Aviles (right) shared her summer youth employment program experience with Channel 35's LA This Week segment
Approximately 662 young Angelenos attended Hire LA’s Youth Super Satur-Yay event May 18, 2019, the City’s official summer kick-off event for Mayor Eric Garcetti’s youth employment initiative.

EWDD’s 14 YouthSource Centers opened up their doors for the special event, providing an opportunity for youth to visit their local YouthSource Center and get first dibs on a summer job through Hire LA’s Youth by giving them a chance to register and fill out required paperwork on-site. The program gives youth a chance to build skills that will last them a lifetime, said Makeda Vela, YouthSource Director.

“This gives an opportunity to see what it’s like to get out there, earn an honest paycheck and realize their dreams.”

Makeda and long-time Hire LA’s Youth participant Adaena Aviles, 22, were both interviewed about the program for a segment on LA This Week, Channel 35’s weekly news program that highlights the week’s events in LA and City government.

“This program has been like a second family to me,” Adaena said. “I started Hire LA’s Youth when I was 14 years old. I was able to get my first job experience, which is something that not many people are willing to give to a 14 year old.”

Adaena said that she had the opportunity to try many different jobs, but it was after she began teaching financial literacy as part of the program that she realized she had an aptitude and passion for business and finance. Now, she will major in business when she transfers to California State University, Los Angeles, this fall.

Adaena shared that it’s important for employers continue to providing jobs through Hire LA’s Youth because, “We are the future of this country. We are the future of the world, so just letting us in at such a young age, it really helps us build ourselves.”
